Returning to school as an adult learner was one of the most rewarding decisions of my lifetime and at the same time the
most difficult. I used to regret that I didn’t finish my entire education directly after school, however I did attend
a two year school and studied Early Childhood Education, I didn’t get to complete my degree instead I started my family
with the birth of my daughter and decided to devote my life to her. For many years afterward I had taken a class here and
there earning credits towards the future. I always wanted to return to school full time but as a single parent financial burdens
and lack of time always prevented me from doing so.
So one summer not too long ago I decided it was now or never, so I quit my job, enrolled full time at Schenectady County
Community College in the teacher education transfer program and never looked back! I discovered that all those sporadic classes
truly paid off and in 2 full semesters and a summer I could complete my degree.
The professors at SCCC are incredible I believe that their support, understanding and spirit have driven me to where I
am today. They never gave me a break they did however cheer me on they never stopped believing in me, even on those days I
was ready to give it all up they kept me going forward. I have to say that SCCC thought me to be a professional student, a
time manager and an advocate for my own interests. Their undying will for me to succeed has influenced what type of teacher
I want to be.
The teacher education program labeled the hardest program at SCCC has given me so many meaningful and valuable lessons
that I can take to my next of level education and into the classroom. The practical and hands on experiences have directed
and guided me to become extremely vested in the field of education.
The open forums and small class sizes have allowed me to become comfortable in expressing my views and ideas. Professors
seem to always use a strength based approach and take time to consider all possibly theories and ideas from their students.
This approach has helped me to recognize how the Progressivism Philosophy is beneficial to students. The small class sizes
have also aided me in forming amazing relationships with my classmates and have helped to create unbreakable bonds as well
as personal relationships with my professors allowing them to me give one on one feedback and direction.
I am thankful everyday that I was able to jumpstart my personal goal of becoming a teacher at SCCC, I am more then thankful
that I have had such exquisite role models to mold me and direct me. I believe that I will make a fantastic teacher and I
owe it all to SCCC. As I near completion of my degree, I take great pride that I will soon be able to say I am a graduate
of the best two year institution around and the day I receive that diploma I will be able to tell my daughter that life takes
us in directions that are sometimes out of our control but it is our job to pull the reigns in and persevere through any hardship
or adversity, and this time when I say it I am credible and she can admire me for doing what I set out to do and I can be
her educational role model just like the professors here at SCCC have been to me.
I know that the preparations and education I have received from SCCC will ensure that I will be a successful and productive
teacher. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to begin my education at SCCC and I know that only good things can
happen when I step out into the world and begin the next chapter of my life, as I am prepared, knowledgeable and comfortable
with who I am.
As I took a moment to reflect on my time at SCCC I see a person who was unsure of the future, I was worried. Can I do this?
Will I be good at it? Do I have the energy? Will I make friends? Will my professors like me? Will I be able to complete this
goal? The answer is YES, simply YES, I can, I will and I did.
Thanks to SCCC.
